Candidates for Dark Matter: dark matter and dark energy are the same Thing
In a paper published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, Dr Jamie Farnes, an Oxford University geophysicist, does away with dark matter and dark energy as separate beast. Instead he theoretically combines them into one entity, a strange “dark liquid” that possesses a type of negative gravity”, meaning if you were to push it away, it would accelerate towards you.
Dr Farnes said the liquid might hold the universe in balance, serving what Einstein called his cosmological constant”, the idea that space generates its own energy. As the universe expands, according to Dr Farnes’ theory, more of this dark liquid bubbles into existence, further pushing it apart.
Dr Farnes created a computer model to explore how this dark fluid would affect the universe and found that it could explain why galaxies hold together as they spin instead of flying apart.
But not everyone is quite so enthusiastic!
